On December 1st, 1955 Rosa Parks took her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. She was on her way home from a long day of work as a seamstress. She took a seat in the front of the black section of the bus but when the bus filled up, the bus driver demanded she give up her seat for a white passenger.
And she didn’t.
This act helped end segregation laws in the South and today we honor her!
Parks later co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development to help young people pursue educational opportunities, get them registered to vote and work toward racial peace.
Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005 at the age of 92 but her legacy still lives on.
“As long as there is unemployment, war, crime and all things that go to the infliction of man’s inhumanity to man, regardless — there is much to be done, and people need to work together.”–Rosa Parks
