On yesterday (Jan. 4), President Obama signed the Food-Safety Bill which will give the Food and Drug Administration the power to issue mandatory recalls if businesses do not voluntarily recall harmful foods, requires grocery stores and other food sellers to notify consumers if they have sold food that has been recalled, and improves disease surveillance so outbreaks can be discovered earlier.
This bill turned law will also improve the FDA’s ability to track down the source of contaminated food and increase the frequency of health inspections of “high-risk” food producers.
The biggest and best change that the law will bring is that government and the food industry will be able to focus more on preventing contamination rather than having to do damage control after the outbreaks occur.
