Texas police shot and killed a 15-year-old eighth-grade student in the hallway of his middle school on yesterday (Jan. 4th) after he pointed what looked to be a handgun at police officers. It turned out that the weapon wasn’t in fact a real gun, but it was a pellet gun which resembled the real thing.
According to Interim Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez, “The 15-year-old had plenty of opportunities to lower the gun and listen to the officers’ orders, and he didn’t want to.”
Two officers fired three shots, hitting Jaime at least twice, according to police.
Sources say shortly before he was shot, Jaime Gonzalez had walked into a classroom and for no reason punched a boy in the face and then ran out into the hallway. Another student there said her friends who were closer to the confrontation heard the Jaime threaten to kill everyone.
“There were witnesses that saw everything. We are happy there were not other victims,” Rodriguez said.

This is so sad. Why would he even pretend he was going to shoot the police though? I understand the police have to protect themselves and the other students in the building, but did they have to kill him? Couldn’t they have just shot him in the leg or arm? Not sure how I’m feeling about that.
