The letters ACL may not mean much to many of you but to a competitive athlete the term ACL represents a significant knee injury that can cause heartache and disrupt a promising career.
An injury plagued season for reigning NBA MVP, Derrick Rose has taken a turn for the worst in the Chicago Bulls’ opening game of their first-round playoff series against the young, energetic Philadelphia 76ers.
For Derrick Rose, his worst fears were confirmed when the Chicago Bulls announced that their star player, will be sidelined for the remainder of the post season with a torn ACL. The nightmare began for Rose when he came down hard on his left knee after his drive to the basket with 1 min and 30 seconds left in the game, was met by 2 defenders who forced him to change directions. It was a drive that Rose has made through out his career, but this time the results were bad.
The only question Bulls’ fans would like to know, is why was he still in the game with so little time remaining, with the team being up by 12 points? One would even question the coach’s decision to keep him in, knowing he has been injury prone all year. The ACL is very critical to an athlete because it provides so much stability to the knee. For Derrick Rose, the need for his knees are very critical to his style of play. His game is built on speed, having a quick change of direction and the ability to explode past defenders in the paint.
The question now is how will this injury affect his career? With Derrick Rose out who will put the team on their back to carry them to victory and possibly the championship? Will they even get out of the first round?
True, the Bulls are 18-9 without him but every team needs their leader in the long run, Rose is the Bulls leader. We wish him the best in dealing with his injury. Needless to say, he has a long, road to recovery ahead of him. The Heat have no excuses!
