NFL player and Tennessee Titans reserve wide receiver O.J.Murdock has died of an apparent suicide, Tampa, Fla police have said.

Murdock, 25, was found inside of his car Monday (July 30th) morning around 8:30,  in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Tampa police said a 911 caller reported hearing a gunshot from inside a parked vehicle in front of the school. Murdock was found alone in his car at 8:30 a.m. ET.

“I don’t know if he was alert,” police spokesperson Laura McElroy said. “I just know he was still alive and he was severely wounded from the gunshot.“

He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died 2 hours later.

O.J. born Orenthal James Murdock, never played a game in the NFL because he had been sidelined with an injury since signing last year.

According to reports, Murdock didn’t report to training camp over the weekend because of personal issues.  The entire Titan organization was shocked and confused after hearing about his death.

In a statement the Titans said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of O.J. Murdock’s death this morning.”

Members of the Titans sent condolences and prayers with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy.

“In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them,” the Titans said in a statement.

“He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year’s training camp.”

He sent a text message to Al McCray, his former receivers coach at Fort Hays State, who says that he was in good spirits just days before:

“Coach, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family. I apologize.”

We can’t imagine what was going through his mind as he decided to take his life but our hearts go out to any love ones that he left behind.
